Summer Watering Tips! 💦

Good watering habits are crucial for maintaining a healthy and thriving vegetable garden during the hot summer months. But sometimes it’s hard to know if you are over-watering or under-watering your plants!

Here are some top tips to ensure your vegetables and plants receive the right amount of water:

Check your plants: Be on the lookout for wilting leaves, drooping plants, yellowing or browning leaves, and slow plant growth as this can indicate your plants are thirsty and need water! But note that there could be other reasons, like poor nutrition or disease, that your plants have these issues so implement the next tip to be sure!

Monitor soil moisture: To avoid root rot that may occur with overwatering, regularly check the moisture level of the soil. Stick your finger about an inch or two into the soil to feel for moisture. If it’s dry, it’s time to water! You may have to adjust watering frequency as needed. Extremely hot periods may mean you’ll need to water more frequently and cooler days and lots of rain will mean less watering.

Water early and at the roots: Water your garden in the early morning when the temperatures are lower to allow plants to absorb water before the heat of the day causes evaporation. Also, water at the base of the plant to help prevent fungal diseases caused by wet leaves.

Water deeply: Provide a thorough watering to penetrate the soil deeply, encouraging plant roots to grow deeper. This helps plants grow large and healthy which will allow them to withstand heat and drought better.

Remember, different vegetables and plants have varying water needs, so it's important to research the specific requirements of the crops you're growing. Observing your plants and responding to their cues will also help you fine-tune your watering routine for the best results!
